Laghusiddhāntakaumudī (LSK) of Varadarāja - Part 1

Maṅgalācaraṇa 

The Grantha (text) begins with the following Maṅgalācaraṇa (benidictory beginning) verse in Anuṣṭhubcandas -

नत्वा सरस्वतीं देवीं शुद्धां गुण्यां करोम्यहम्।

पाणिनीयप्रवेशाय लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदीम्॥

natvā sarasvatīṃ devīṃ śuddhāṃ guṇyāṃ karomyaham|

pāṇinīyapraveśāya laghusiddhāntakaumudīm||

The Prayojana (purpose) of a Maṅgalācaraṇa may be threefold -

1. Vighnanāśa - destruction of obstacles
2. Granthasamāpana - completion of the Grantha
3. Granthapracāraprasāraṇa - dissemination of the Grantha

Maṅgalācaraṇa may be of three types -

1. Namaskārātmaka - obeisance to the Divine
2. Āśīrvādātmaka - blessing the audience
3. Vastunirdeśātmaka - revealing the subject matter of the Grantha

In the above Maṅgalācaraṇa,

1. The following is Namaskārātmaka because this is an obeisance to Sarasvatī - नत्वा सरस्वतीं देवीं शुद्धां गुण्यां natvā sarasvatīṃ devīṃ śuddhāṃ guṇyāṃ 
2. The following is Vastunirdeśātmaka because this reveals the name of the Grantha to be Laghusiddhāntakaumudī which is meant for pāṇinīyapraveśa (entry into the Pāṇinīya Vyākaraṇa) - पाणिनीयप्रवेशाय लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदीम् pāṇinīyapraveśāya laghusiddhāntakaumudīm

The following are a few grammatical details of the words in the Maṅgalācaraṇa -

There are two Samastapadas (morphological compounds) in the Maṅgalācaraṇa -

1. पाणिनीयप्रवेशाय - सप्तमीतत्पुरुषसमासः
• पाणिनिना प्रोक्तम् पाणिनीयम्। That which was said by Pāṇini is Pāṇinīya.
• पाणिनीये प्रवेशः पाणिनीयप्रवेशः। Entry into Pāṇinīya is Pāṇinīyapraveśa.
• तस्मै पाणिनीयप्रवेशाय। For the purpose of Pāṇinīyapraveśa is pāṇinīyapraveśāya.
2. लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदीम् - षष्ठीतत्पुरुषगर्भकर्मधारयसमासः
• (वैयाकरणानां) सिद्धान्तानां कौमुदी सिद्धान्तकौमुदी। The moon light of the principles/views (of Grammarians) is Siddhāntakaumudī.
• लघ्वी च सा सिद्धान्तकौमुदी लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी। The short Siddhāntakaumudī is Laghusiddhāntakaumudī.
• तां लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदीम् । That in accusative case is Laghusiddhāntakaumudīm.
